About the Artist:

Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011) was an influential American ceramic artist and painter. Born in Pepeekeo, Hawaii, to Japanese immigrant parents, she was a pivotal figure in the post-war American ceramics movement. Takaezu is renowned for her closed-form vessels, which often blurred the lines between pottery and sculpture. Her work is characterized by its organic forms and richly glazed surfaces, often inspired by nature and traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Takaezu studied at the University of Hawaii and later at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where she was influenced by Finnish ceramist Maija Grotell. Throughout her career, she taught at various institutions, including the Cleveland Institute of Art and Princeton University. Her work has been exhibited in numerous prestigious galleries and museums, and she received multiple honors for her contributions to the field of ceramics. Takaezu's artistic legacy continues to inspire contemporary artists in both ceramics and other media.
