More about the artist:
Charles Maurin entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1875, and later studied at the Academie Julian. He widely showed at the Salons throughout the 1880's and 1890's, and was highly admired as a draftsman by Edgar Degas, among others.
Maurin was highly adept in pastel, chalk and pencil, and he is credited with having invented the spritztechnik, the use of an atomizer to spray pigment onto the paper to create atmospheric watercolour landscapes of great beauty, of which the present work is a very rare example.
An illustrator, printmaker and teacher at the Académie Julien, Charles Maurin was associated with the Parisian avant-garde, adopting both realist and Symbolist tendencies, and from 1890 preferred to exhibit at the Salon des Indépendents rather than the Salon itself.
