This etching, titled Mending the Nets - Hana, was created by Huc Mazelet Luquiens (1881-1961), a pioneering printmaker known for his sensitive depictions of Hawaiian landscapes and island life. The scene captures a peaceful moment on the shores of Hana, where a group of workers are repairing a fishing net. The composition showcases Luquiens' masterful use of line and shading, offering a delicate portrayal of both human activity and the natural surroundings. The distant pier, rugged coastline, and small boats tethered to the shore give a sense of the community's deep connection to the ocean and the rhythms of island life.
Huc Mazelet Luquiens was a prominent figure in the art world of Hawai'i during the early 20th century, having moved to the islands in 1917. His formal training at Yale University and the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris honed his etching techniques, which he later used to capture the spirit of Hawai'i's landscapes
