More information about C. Barton Potter Co.:

Bart Potter was born and raised in Hawaii. He was fortunate to apprentice at George Gilmore's Guitar and Lute Workshop in Honolulu in 1974-75, the final year it was in operation. He continued to make guitars and ukulele on his own until the 1980 purchase of a sawmill. His ownership of a sawmill coalesced with his background in luthierie and in 1984, under the name C. Barton Potter Co, he began preparing Hawaii-grown woods for the luthierie market. Potter harvests or negotiates for high quality, legally-obtained logs from sources throughout the Hawaiian islands and saws them into acoustic instrument components that meet the needs and specifications of what has become a worldwide customer base.

Over the years, Potter has enjoyed hearing from his customers that tone wood he provided wound up in instruments being played on stage by Eric Clapton, Earl Klugh, Taylor Swift, Jake Shimabukuro, Michael Messer, Ben Harper, Richie Sambora, Kenny Loggins and Chet Atkins, to name a few. Potter is pleased to have happy customers in Hawaii and across the U.S. from El Cajon, California all the way to Lewiston, Maine as well as in Germany, France, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia.

Together with a resource-owning partner, Potter produced container loads of veneer sliced from Hawaii-grown woods. He was one of the founders of the Hawaii Forest Industry Association and served on its Board of Directors for 19 years. Potter has worked with scientists researching different aspects of Hawaii's Acacia koa tree, providing observations on growth habits, genetic tendencies, pathogens and responses and physical and mechanical characteristics. He has also participated in efforts to establish standards for both defects and appearance of Acacia koa. All woods Bart sells are Hawaii-grown and he consciously does not sell or promote the sale of any endangered or illegally obtained woods.
