Up for sale from a recent estate in Honolulu Hawaii, this 1930s or '40s Hawaii framed original watercolor painting that is untitled but depicts three Hula dancers on a stage with a female drummer in the foreground that was created by Robert Lee Eskridge (1891-1975) but is unsigned. More about the artist:
Born on Nov. 22, 1891 in Philipsburg, PA. Eskridge moved with his family to Pasadena as a child. He studied at Los Angeles College of Fine Arts, AIC, Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, with George Senseney and André Lhote in Paris. After traveling extensively in Spain and the South Seas, he lived in Chicago, New York, and Coronado Beach, CA (1917-32). Upon moving to Honolulu in 1932, he taught at the University of Hawaii until the bombing in 1941. As well as an artist, he was also the author-illustrator of several books about Hawaii including Umi, the Hawaiian Boy Who Became King, My South Seas Playmates, and Manga Reva. He died in Honolulu on April 16, 1975. Exh: Panama-Pacific Expo (San Diego), 1915 (bronze medal); AIC, 1928 (prize); Honolulu Academy of Arts, 1933; Century of Progress Expo (Chicago), 1933; Calif. Condition:
The item is overall in good pre-owned condition, it was not inspected out of its frame, the paper seems medium heavy but evenly toned, the painting is unsigned but as before very clearly identifiable as a R.L Eskridge original from a local estate that had ties to the artists and from which I am listing other signed and unsigned paintings, basic frame with some abrasions in places,
