Born in Honolulu in 1887, during the reign of King Kalākaua when Hawai'i was still a kingdom, Fraser's deep connection to her homeland is evident in her work. A graduate of Punahou School in 1905 and Wellesley College in 1909, Fraser's education and upbringing in a period of significant cultural change in Hawai'i profoundly influenced her art.

Fraser is perhaps best known for the murals she painted around the world, but she also had a significant body of work that included portrayals of Hawaiian legends and other themes through linoleum cuts, oil painting, ceramics, and frescoes.
