This 1921 etching of a man swimming, was created by renowned Hawaiian artist Huc Mazelet Luquiens (1881-1961). Luquiens was a master of printmaking, specializing in etching and lithography, and is best known for his depictions of the Hawaiian Islands and its people. He was a key figure in the early Hawaiian art scene and served as a professor at the University of Hawaii, where he founded its Art Department in 1924.
The etching captures the raw and energetic movement of a man swimming, with bold lines emphasizing the fluidity of the water and the swimmer's dynamic posture. The contrast of light and shadow brings depth to the scene, while the technique showcases Luquiens' expertise in creating expressive and textured works through etching.
This particular piece has a personalized note written in pencil along the bottom margin, reading "To Harriet Hatch," signed by the artist, adding a personal and intimate touch to the work. The etching also bears Luquiens' etched signature, further confirming its authenticity.
The artwork is framed in an elegant vintage frame with textured detailing, though the matting shows light foxing, a condition consistent with its age. The reverse of the frame shows signs of wear, with noticeable water stains. Despite these signs of age, the piece remains a beautiful representation of Luquiens' ability to capture both human form and nature in motion.
This etching would make a distinctive addition to any collection of early Hawaiian art or historical etchings, embodying both the artistic spirit of the islands and Luquiens' significant contribution to the development of art in Hawaii.
