This Imperial Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse (Iron Cross, 2nd Class) from 1914 is a German military decoration awarded for acts of bravery during combat. The cross features a multi-piece construction, with the central core made from iron that has been painted black, and the frame crafted from nickel-silver, which has been silver washed and lacquered. The obverse of the cross displays a pattée-style design, with a prominent "W" (representing Kaiser Wilhelm II) in the center. Above the "W" is a king's crown, and below it is the date "1914," which marks the year the award was reauthorized by Emperor Wilhelm II on August 5, 1914. The design is enclosed by a silvered ribbed border.
On the reverse side, the cross commemorates the original establishment of the Iron Cross in 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It features a central oak leaf and acorn cluster, below "FW" (the cypher for King Friedrich Wilhelm III), with a crown at the top and the date "1
Condition:
This item is in good pre-owned condition with visible signs of age and wear. The black enamel paint on the iron core shows some surface wear, and the silver wash on the nickel-silver frame has naturally patinated over time. The loop and ring are securely attached, though they exhibit minor oxidation consistent with age. Overall, the medal retains its historical character and detail. Please see photos for details.
