Up for sale from a recent client in Honolulu Hawaii this attractive Japanese early 18th century Edo period Imari porcelain jar with lid, the baluster form jar painted in overglaze polychrome enamels and underglaze cobalt blue with four petal shaped reserve panels enclosed by cobalt blue frames, two panels with Chinese inspired scene of a scholar seated on a table holding a small fan, looking out across a pond or lake and admiring the scenery with a flowering plum tree, pine tree, bamboo, and a palm tree with fan shaped leaves, the scholar accompanied by a woman wearing a long sleeve gown, the other two panels with a scene of a pair of male and female pheasants under the branches of a maple tree at the edge of a lake or pond, a crab and a conch shell depicted on the stylized water, the reserve panels each surrounded by cobalt blue borders painted with diaper pattern, the shoulders with blue phoenix birds on a red enamel hosoge ground, the domes cover surmounted by a pointed knob, decorated with four small reserve shaped panels, two with designs of maples and two with designs of palm leaves, surrounded by cobalt blue borders repeating the design on the body.
