Up for sale from a local estate in Honolulu Hawaii this circa 1890s German open edition etching print that is untitled but depicts a shepherd and his flock of sheep before dawn and is signed in the stone by the well known artist Helmut Liesegang (1858-1945). More about the artist:
Helmut Liesegang grew up in Kleve, a small city in the Lower Rhine area, from where he very soon started to visit the Academy in Düsseldorf. When he finished his studies, he started traveling and went to Belgium, the Netherlands and Paris where he got to know many important painters such as Max Liebermann.
He returned to his home area and the nature of the Lower Rhine region became his most important subject. He fled the bombardments during the war and went to Leipzig where he died in 1945, named a professor beforehand. He has been awarded many prizes and honors during his lifetime and is nowadays known as one of the most important representative of the Düsseldorfer Malerschule.
Condition:
The print is overall in good pre-owned condition, it is evenly toned throughout, the print was not inspected out of the frame, the mat and frame are ok but nothing special, the mat also with some staining in places,
