This exquisite late 19th-century Norwegian sterling silver and enamel tea set by renowned jeweler David-Andersen is a beautiful example of Scandinavian craftsmanship and Art Nouveau design. The set, housed in its original fitted case with a silk-lined interior, bears the mark "David-Andersen Jeweler Christiania," indicating its creation during the period when Oslo was known as Christiania, dating the set to approximately 1880.
Included in the set are six sterling silver (.925) teaspoons, each adorned with a vibrant green enamel over intricately engraved patterns. The enamelwork displays a delicate lattice or floral design beneath a glossy surface, exemplifying the high level of artistry for which David-Andersen is known. Complementing the spoons are a pair of matching sugar tongs, also featuring the same detailed green enamel.
A beautifully crafted sterling silver tea strainer with an enameled rim sits as the centerpiece of the set, accompanied by its matching stand. The strainer was designed to catch loose tea leaves as tea was poured, adding both functionality and elegance to the tea service.
Though the set shows some signs of age, including light wear on the spoons and case, the enamel remains vibrant and intact. This tea set not only represents a practical collection of tea implements but also serves as a work of art, capturing the luxurious and refined style of the late 19th century. It is a truly collectible piece, showcasing the expert craftsmanship of David-Andersen, one of Norway's most celebrated silversmiths.
