Up for sale from a recent client in Honolulu Hawaii, this original 1740s Japanese hand-colored woodblock print hashira-e mounted as a kakemono, depicting the actor Onoe Kikugoro holding a bamboo tea whisk (sasara) in preparation for a folk dance sequence, his kimono decorated with an all over pattern of plovers in waves, a haiku poem inscribed at upper right: Esugata o mite / kazari take / sasara no oto ni / kikugoro 'Seeing his picture: Kikugoro in the sound of the beautiful bamboo whisks' signed Hogetsudo Shomei hashira-e kongen Okumura Bunkaku Masanobu Shohitsu with seal Tanchosai. The item is in good pre-owned condition, print was inspected by the Asian Senior Fine Arts appraiser in Honolulu who said it was an original, it is laid down onto a backing, it is toned and brown stained thought, the colors are strong, the mat is non archival, I checked with my paper conserver and they said the paper does not appear brittle so they think removing the print from the backing is possible,
